The Geological Survey of Estonia (GSE) is a research-oriented governmental institution which commenced operation as an affiliation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in the beginning of January 2018. The GSE main objective is to serve as a primary source of geologic information for Estonia in order to enhance public understanding on issues related to geological mapping, groundwater, mineral resources as well as on environmental geology of Estonia.

Senior Geophysicist - Geologist


The candidate should have a substantial experience in geophysical science to tackle on characterization of mineral resources exploration targets of interest using various types of methods (seismic, magnetic, electromagnetic and gravity). The selected candidate will be an experienced analyst with specific experience in technical reporting and signal processing. Additionally, previous field experience and knowledge of emplacing sensors and a general understanding of data collection and exploitation of various ground sensing technologies would be preferred. The ability to be proactive and work with minimal supervision will be essential.

Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of research experience, PhD degree preferred;
  • experience in 3D-modelling of geophysical features;
  • experience with numerical computation techniques;
  • extensive knowledge in mineral resources exploration main methods (applications and interpretations);
  • extensive knowledge and practical skills on seismic, magnetic, electromagnetic and gravity methods;
  • project management skills;
  • analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • flexibility and adaptability;
  • can work independently with little oversight/guidance;
  • demonstrated ability to carry out independent original scientific work;
  • language skills: a good spoken and written English, Russian is an advantage.

Primary responsibilities:

  • research design and deployment of geophysical survey strategies in prospecting Earth resources in Phanerozoic sediment cover of Estonia as well as in Precambrian crystalline rocks;
  • collection and processing of various geophysical data for examination of crustal basement structure features and for traditional digital geophysical mapping surveys;
  • participate in proposal efforts.
