Research Professor/Chief Expert in Geomaterials and Applied Mineralogy
The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is one of the leading geosciences research centers in Europe. We are seeking a Research Professor to develop our know-how and R&I project activities related to geomaterials and applied mineralogy, including mineral-based materials, waste utilization, recycling and substitution, with the aim of creating new innovations and customer-oriented applications. Further main tasks for the successful applicant will be to initiate, prepare and lead national and international R&I projects in the field funded through competitive financing, and to implement related competence development at GTK.
A Research professor is expected to have a Ph. D. in geosciences or another closely related discipline and he/she should be an acknowledged expert in the field, and have a good track record and experience in R&I activities related to geomaterials research and applied mineralogy. Alternatively, the position may also be filled as a Chief Expert, who should have a Ph.D. in geosciences or another closely related discipline, and preferably postdoctoral experience in the field. Good understanding and experience in using modern research instruments and techniques in geomaterial and applied mineralogical studies is necessary for the job.
The successful candidate must be highly motivated and have well-established networks with international research groups and be able to demonstrate an ability to attract external funding. Research experience in cooperation with material scientists and the private sector is appreciated. Special emphasis is placed on collaborative skills and the ability to lead research projects with international partners, as well as the ability to lead competence development at GTK. Fluency in English is the minimum language requirement.
The appointment is for five years, with the possibility of extension, and is located at our Espoo office. GTK has a unique laboratory infrastructure with in-house facilities ranging from a mineral processing pilot plant to a full complement of microanalytical instrumentation located in Espoo and Outokumpu. GTK is a core partner of the EIT RawMaterials KIC consortium. We offer an internationally oriented work environment with highly trained personnel.
Benefits of the job include a working week of 36 hours with daily flexibility, generous annual holidays and a government healthcare and pension plan. GTK's payroll system consists of a job-specific component (Level 12, €5414/month for a Research Professor, or Level 11, €4616/month for a Chief Expert) plus a personal component of up to 50%, depending on performance and expertise.
