The Geological Survey of Finland has initiated a new Postdoctoral program for which we invite applications from enthusiastic, highly motivated PhD graduates, to work with us in both established and emerging priority research areas. The applicants must have completed their PhD at the time of the submission of the application, but preferably no longer than five years ago. Fluency in English is a minimum language requirement, and the candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to work and communicate effectively within a team environment. The successful applicants will be partly assigned to GTK`s ongoing research and innovation projects, and they will be expected to participate in new project development within international innovation ecosystems.
The Postdoctoral Researcher position can start as early as 1st January 2019, or sometime during Q1 2019, and will be filled initially for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal for a further 2 years and the possibility of permanent employment at the GTK. Postdoctoral researcher: Mineral Systems of Battery Metals
The postdoc position in the field of Mineral Systems of Battery Metals will focus on ore geology research with emphasis on mineral deposits which could be sources of cobalt and other battery/critical metals. The major aims of research include development of mineral system models and definition vectors to ore to support mineral potential mapping. Applicants for this position should have competences in at least three of the following fields of research:

Postdoctoral researcher: Geometallurgy of Battery Minerals, with emphasis on cobalt
The postdoctoral position in the field of Geometallurgy of Battery Minerals, with emphasis on Cobalt. Finland is well placed to become one of the market leaders in this area given its known mineral wealth, but little research has been done on the mineralogy and mineral processing aspects of our cobalt-rich occurrences. Both primary and secondary cobalt resources in Finland will be examined, and a holistic geometallurgical approach will be taken during the research. The candidate must be in possession of a PhD in Geology, Mining Engineering, or Minerals Engineering. A background in applied research and close cooperation with industry is highly desired. The postdoc will be placed at our Espoo office.
Postdoctoral researcher: Digitization of Mineral Processing Plants
This postdoctoral position in the field of Digitization of Mineral Processing Plants involves the digitization of mineral processing plants, such that operators and users can acquire information on the performance of their physical plants in a continuous, near real-time environment.
The work will embrace the latest developments in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) because processing plants of the future must take full advantage of, and keep pace with, the ever-changing digital advances of the modern world. Significant advances have already been made in building virtual worlds based on real ones (Digital Twins), but this postdoc position builds on these developments, and attempts to fully automate and digitize an entire mineral processing plant, taking into account all possible sources of data, from mine exploration geology, to in-situ ore characterization, through comminution, separation, concentration and to creation of final products and by-products. The pilot plant at GTK's Mintec facility in Outokumpu will form the basis of the study. The postdoc can be placed either there or at our Espoo office. The candidate must be in possession of a PhD in Minerals Engineering, Mining Engineering, or Applied Geology, with some practical mineral processing experience. Evidence of a previous close cooperation with industry is considered highly desirable.
Postdoctoral researcher: Artificial Intelligence in Geodata Interpretation
The postdoc position in the field of Artificial Intelligence in Geodata Interpretation will focus on developing and applying machine learning, spatial data mining and statistical methods to geological research and data in mineral potential mapping for various commodities, and possibly on selected other geological case studies.
The applicant must have a PhD degree in an applicable discipline in natural or technical sciences. We expect you to have the appropriate education and especially gained experience in spatial data-analysis, data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning, statistics and mathematics. Skills in Python coding, R -language and Matlab are considered as beneficial. In addition, competence in geographical information systems (GIS), spatial data analysis or geosciences (geology, geophysics, geochemistry) are highly desired advantages for the candidate. The postdoc can be placed in our Espoo, Rovaniemi or Kuopio office.

Postdoctoral researcher: Hydrogeochemistry
For the postdoctoral position in the field of Hydrogeochemistry we look for a person with strong experimental background in any field of applied hydrogeochemistry from shallow to deep aquifers, from freshwater resources to industrial, recycled and/or radionuclide-impacted waters. Applicants for this position should have competences in at least three of the following fields of research:
The Candidate shall be flexible and versatile, as the postdoc will be included in selected research and development projects of GTK (including water supply, managed aquifer recharge, acid mine drainage, nuclear waste management and/or geothermal use of the aquifers.). She/he will be capable not only with academic research skills but also in implementing research-based knowledge to support society.
The candidate must be in possession of a PhD in Geochemistry or similar discipline. Implication in previous projects supported by international funding (e.g. EU H2020, NSERC, NERC) will be appreciated. The postdoc will be placed at our Espoo office.
