The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for a Research Scientist / Senior Scientist in the Energy and Construction Solutions unit in Espoo. You can also work flexibly remotely in Finland.

Your tasks are related to the final disposal and long-term safety of nuclear waste, but also to other applications that require expertise in bedrock hydrogeochemistry and hydrogeology. In your role, you will participate in research and project activities related to deep bedrock hydrogeochemistry and rock-related geochemistry as part of a research group or as a project manager. In general, groundwater evolution and rock-water interactions, as well as aspects related to hydrogeological and biogeochemical issues, are your key research themes. One of the priorities is to understand the processes that affect the amount and chemical composition of deep bedrock groundwater in a changing climate. Gases dissolved in groundwater are also covered by the studies.

The emphasis and responsibilities of the tasks can be adjusted according to the capabilities and experience of the person selected. As a research scientist, you are responsible for implementing or managing projects and applying for funding, as well as producing scientific publications for your research work. As a senior scientist your responsibilities include broader tasks in your field, participation in interdisciplinary research, and supervising research work and projects. Depending on your abilities, your responsibilities include scientific publishing and customer reporting, as well as working in national and international networks and projects.

You will join an active and innovative group of about 10 people. With us, you will be able to participate in research work and projects in an internationally significant field and thereby promote safe disposal operations, in which Finland has a leading position.

What we expect

  • You have a master's degree in geology or other field suitable for the position.
  • You are familiar with
    • hydrogeochemical and/or hydrogeological research of groundwater in bedrock,

    • the geology of crystalline bedrock.
  • You have good written and oral English skills.
  • You are able to work on paid and co-financed projects in both domestic and foreign projects as part of a working group and as a project manager.
  • You have good collaborative skills and an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to research and development.
  • You have the readiness and ability to work in the field and, if necessary, to travel abroad.

We appreciate

  • A PhD degree in a field suitable for the position
  • Experience in bedrock water and gas sampling techniques
  • Expertise in mineralogy
  • Experience in geochemical modeling
