The Department of Applied Geosciences in the Faculty of Science at the German University of Technology in Oman is seeking applications for the positions of

Assistant/Associate Professor in Applied Geosciences (Sedimentology and Basin Analysis)
to join as of 1st September 2018

1. Requirements and Competencies

Applicants need to hold a PhD degree and preferably Habilitation or equivalent. Candidates must have at least three years of experience with teaching and thesis supervision. The successful candidate will have a focus on sedimentary processes and systems, with a preference given to candidates with a strong background in Sedimentology and Basin Analysis. We are looking for candidates with industry experience or a demonstrated record of strong links to the petroleum industry, preferable in the Middle East. The ability to attract external funding, or clear promise thereof, is desirable. Candidates are expected to be excellent researchers as evidenced by their contribution to the advancement of research internationally.

Candidates need to demonstrate a record of teaching a wide range of courses on the undergraduate and postgraduate level, complementing the fields of Petroleum Geology, Water and Mineral Resources. A desire to undertake field teaching and research in a desert climate are also considered assets.

Applicants need to feel comfortable working in a multidisciplinary department complementing the fields of Petroleum Geology, Water and Mineral Resources.

2. Tasks and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses and contributing to the development of postgraduate courses at MSc-/PhD-level in close collaboration with professors at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Candidates have to demonstrate leadership in research, administration, community service and consultancy. They are expected to develop their own externally funded research programmes within the Department's strategy focusing on Sedimentology and Basin Analysis as well as improve their teaching skills to adapt to local needs and build a strong connection between research and industry.

3. Our Offer

GUtech offers an international and dynamic environment with an extensive research network provided by RWTH Aachen University. A committee comprising of RWTH and GUtech academic staff will select the successful applicants and nominate them for academic positions at GUtech. The employer will be the German University of Technology in Oman.

The appointment is initially for four years and renewable, dependent on positive performance reviews. The salary is internationally competitive. Offers are subject to receiving Omani teaching and labour permits, which will be arranged by the University. The successful candidate is expected to take up employment in September 2018.
