The new research group "Applied Geosciences", which is part of the Institute of Geosciences and Geography of the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, offers a vacancy for a

PhD student and research assistant

to be appointed at October 1st or later, for a duration of three years. The fixed-term employment contract is part time (75%).

Remuneration is set according to the German salary scale for university employees up to pay grade 13 TV-L depending on the assigned tasks and personal qualifications.

Your profile:

  • Master in Geosciences or any related field of natural sciences or engineering
  • Very good quantitative skills
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary, data- and computer-based environmental sciences
  • Interest in teaching and supervision of students
  • Motivated, critical, friendly and a team player
  • Very good command of the English language
  • Good command of the German language or willingness to learn

Your tasks and opportunities:

  • Focus of your PhD research on analysis of climate change effects on groundwater quality and quantity
  • Involvement in the acquisition of complementary third-party funds
  • Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Contribution to teaching in BSc/MSc courses in the field of Applied Geosciences and Management of Natural Resources (3 hours per semester)
  • International publication of high-level scientific results

The new research team offers excellent conditions for carrying out computational work and modelling. It has a modern lab and field equipment for hydrogeological, hydrochemical and geotechnical testing, which may be further expanded.
