Geoscientist / Engineer (Open Rank)

The Edinburgh Collaborative of Subsurface Science and Engineering (ECOSSE) is a Joint Research Institute that is part of a £24M investment in the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering and Mathematics, a pooling initiative between Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh. ECOSSE combines expertise from the Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IPE) at Heriot-Watt University, the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh, the British Geological Survey, and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre. ECOSSE covers all fields in subsurface science and engineering, including: oil and gas recovery; groundwater quality; gas hydrate studies; the science and technology of carbon storage; and natural and anthropogenic hazards associated with subsurface engineering constructions.

Funding allows us to seek another academic-level candidate to join ECOSSE. The appointment, to be held at Heriot-Watt, is open to all academic levels from Professor to Lecturer. The research speciality of the candidate is also open, subject to meeting the objectives of ECOSSE, but we would be very keen to receive applications from candidates specialising in carbonate reservoirs, reservoir geomechanics, rock physics, or petrophysics. Applicants must familiarise themselves with the current research themes of IPE and ECOSSE, and explain how their research vision complements the existing portfolio. For information on current research themes and collaborative activities, see:

The salary will be commensurate with the level of the appointment.

Informal inquiries can be made via Dr Gary Couples, Depute Director of ECOSSE, Institute of Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh EH14 4AS. Email gary.couples@pet.hw.ac.uk
