Research Fellow, Research Associate and PhD Studentship positions
Salary range for Research Associate: £26,580 - £38,730 per annum
Salary range for Research Fellow: £35,680 - £46,970 per annum
Up to four fixed-term appointments and four PhD Studentships
Geophysical imaging and inversion, seismic and electromagnetic tomography,
petroleum and mining geophysics
Applications are invited for up to four research positions and up to four PhD Studentships in the area of computational applied geophysics. Successful applicants will join an established team working on 3D seismic and electromagnetic modelling and inversion with applications to petroleum exploration and production, mining and mineral production, carbon sequestration and environmental impact reduction and imaging the interior of the Sun. The overarching project has funding from a variety of sources including UK Research Councils, a consortium of oil and gas companies, the geophysical contracting industry and a major international mining company.
We anticipate appointing candidates with a diverse mixture of backgrounds to join a multidisciplinary team including Geophysicists, Computational Physicists, Computer Scientists and Applied Mathematicians. Our central aim is to develop and apply advanced computational methods to high-resolution geophysical datasets in order to obtain highly resolved, quantitative and three-dimensional models of the subsurface. We are interested in candidates with numerical and parallel programming skills, with the ability to process and analyse large geophysical datasets, with an interest in developing and implementing theory that can be applied to solve large real-world problems.
Research Fellows should have a well-established international record of relevant research, and extensive post-graduate research experience (normally assessed as equivalent to ten years). Research Associates should hold, or be near to completing, a PhD (or equivalent) and have experience in a relevant research field. Applications for a PhD Studentship position should hold, or be near to completing, a degree (or equivalent) in a numerate science, computational science, engineering or in a mathematical field.
The positions are all funded by external sponsorship and appointments will therefore be made on a fixed term basis for up to four years.
Application forms for both the Research Associate and Research Fellow posts can be downloaded from:
