Assistant Professor in Stratigraphy

Faculty of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland



The University of Iceland is a progressive educational and scientific institution. It is a state university, situated in the heart of Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. A modern, diversified and rapidly developing institution, the University of Iceland offers opportunities for study and research in almost 300 programmes spanning most fields of science and scholarship: Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities, Education, Sciences and Engineering. The Faculty of Earth Sciences in the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences has about 200 students in geology, geophysics and geochemistry, including 60 MS and PhD students. Research in earth sciences is carried out within the Institute of Earth Sciences. The Institute provides research facilities for the about 30 teaching and research faculty members. Research within the Institute is organised into three broadly defined themes: Understanding volcanoes, Environment and climate, and Crustal processes.

The Faculty of Earth Sciences in the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, seeks applicants to fill the position of an Assistant Professor in the field of stratigraphy and historical geology. The Assistant Professor is expected to carry out research in the field of stratigraphy, supervise graduate students and teach courses at undergraduate and graduate level in stratigraphy and related fields. Applicant should hold a doctorate degree or equivalent. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential assets.

The appointment will initially be for five years, after which tenure will be granted subject to satisfactory performance. The evaluation of academic merits will be in accordance with Icelandic Law and Rules for the University of Iceland No. 569/2009.

Applicants shall include with their applications certificates attesting to their education and work experience, a list of their publications, a report on their scholarly work and other works they have carried out, and an outline of their research plans if they are offered the position. Applications must make clear which of their publications, the applicants regard as the most important regarding the advertised position (no more than eight publications should be selected). Applicants must send the most important publications with their application, or indications as to where they are accessible in electronic form. When more than one author has produced a publication, the applicant must account for his or her own contribution to the work. Applicants are also expected to include references for their teaching and administrative work, as appropriate.

Salary for the position of Professor will be according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Union of University Teachers, and the Minister of Finance.
