Project title: Characterisation of sand deposits for future MICP treatment
This post is part of a US-Ireland research project into the use of the MICP (microbially induced carbon precipitation) process to treat sand materials, and improve their properties, for civil engineering purposes. The principal test site is in Blessington, Ireland and the project will investigate application of the MICP technique to carbonate-bearing sands, providing fundamental insights on associated controlling processes and factors, as a prelude to potential industrial implementation. The project involves an international team of leading scientists and engineers from 3 research centres (CBBG, US, EEM, Northern Ireland and iCRAG, Southern Ireland). This project will specifically focus on the characterisation of the sands at Blessington. It will involve carrying out a series of in situ geotechnical and geophysical tests as well as a detailed laboratory characterisation both of the geotechnical and geochemical properties of the sand. It will pave the way for full scale testing which will be carried out by others later in the project. The results will be assessed using a framework developed for other materials internationally
Position Description: This two-year full-time Master's by research (MEngSc) position is funded through the new Geohazard and Geotechnical Engineering spoke of Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG). The successful candidate will be registered at University College Dublin, starting at the beginning of September 2020. The Master's stipend is €18,500 per annum, with a contribution to EU fees of €5,500 per annum. The candidate will also be required to contribute up to 150 hours per annum demonstrating undergraduate laboratory classes and / or tutorials.
Candidate Experience: The candidate should have a minimum 2.1 in an Honours Bachelor's degree in Engineering Geology, Geology, Geophysics or Civil Engineering, or an equivalent standard from an overseas University. Some experience in ground investigation and geophysical methods and for civil engineering works would be an advantage.
