The Institute of Geomatics invites applications for a:

Institute Professorship
in
3D geospatial modelling and visual representation

1. Description of position

Function: Head of the unit "3D geospatial modelling and visual representation" Member of the Institute's Management Team

Title / appellation: Professor

Duration: permanent position subject to periodic performance appraisal

Salary range: 45.000 € gross / year plus objectives

Reporting: to the Institute's director

Type of activity: research (70%), teaching/education (30%) with the required management
(The operational units of the Institute shall contribute to the existing and future educational activities at the MSc, Phd and continuous education level. For these activities, additional human resources will be made available.)

Available resources:
  • Associate/assistant professor (AP), junior PhD level (100% funded by the Institute)
  • Laboratory master (LM, approx. 50% funded by the Institute)
  • Project and administrative manager (PAM, approx. 50% funded by the Institute)

The candidate, in her/his position of unit head is expected to identify, select and recruit the AP, the LM and the PAM according to the Institute's rules.

The candidate is expected to build a new research group on the topics described below. He or she shall undertake full responsibility in developing a long term research programme, attracting external funding and participating in the Institute's educational and technology transfer activities.

2. The Institute of Geomatics

The Institute of Geomatics is a non-profit public consortium of the autonomous Government of Catalonia (GC) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). It was created by law of the GC in 1997 and its mission is to promote and develop geomatics, through applied research and education, for the general benefit of society.

The Institute of Geomatics is organized along modern academic management principles. 3. Research terms of reference

Three dimensional geospatial modelling and visual representation.

  • Assimilation and interpretation of geodata into 3D models
    • Assimilation and interpretation of LiDAR point clouds
    • Assimilation and interpretation of photogrammetric point clouds
    • Integration of geospatial data from homogeneous and heterogeneous data sets
  • 3D geospatial models
    • GIS modelling and analysis
    • 3D city modelling
    • Urban and semi urban models
    • Multi-scale modelling and generalization
  • 3D geospatial visual representation
    • 3D cartographic visual representation
    • Realistic 3D scenario simulation
    • Integration of virtual reality and cartographic representation schemes

4. Candidate profile

Academic background and degree:

  • PhD in geomatics or related disciplines (engineering, physics, mathematics or computer science). Ideally, the PhD should have been awarded before the past four years although this is just indicative and not compelling.
  • Experience in conducting and leading research at the academic level. The candidate is, as well, expected to have experience in the management of, at least, small or medium sized research and development projects and in the supervision of PhD and MSc students.
  • Experience in research project management, at the academic level and in cooperation with private industry and public establishments.

Language skills: The candidate is expected to communicate fluently and flawlessly in English. She/he is expected to reach a sufficient "operational" communication level in Catalan and Spanish within three years.

Other: The candidate will be asked to actively participate in the Institute's educational activities and is expected to further develop her/his modern management and leadership abilities.
