Research Assistant position in the Department of Geophysical Imaging, Institute of Geophysics PAS with focus on seismic imaging for mineral exploration.

The Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IG PAS) is the leading scientific center in Poland in the field of Earth physics research. IG PAS participates in various initiatives, including international research projects, also those related to mineral exploration (e.g., ERA-NET ERA-MIN COGITO-MIN project). The Department of Geophysical Imaging has an active role as a partner in Europe-wide H2020 Research-Innovation-Action project related to new exploration technologies of mineral resources. The Department is focused on the development and application of novel seismic imaging techniques, especially those based on the full recorded wavefield (like full-waveform inversion) at different scales (from near-surface to deep crust).

The research assistant candidate will conduct research sponsored by the EU-H2020 project focused primarily on the application of full-waveform inversion technique to 2D/3D data acquired for mineral exploration purposes. Part of the work involves novel reprocessing of legacy 2D seismic data. The research assistant candidate will also work within a larger research team including experts from different countries. Joint research work with other research institutes involved in the project is also envisaged.

We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong interest in research who has an academic master degree, or equivalent, in geophysics, geology, physics, earth sciences or a similar field (formally, four years of university study including a minimum of 1 year at advanced level are required). Linux/Unix and programming skills are necessary; experience and knowledge on seismic data processing are desirable. Prior working knowledge of full-waveform inversion is a plus. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required.

Applications must include a CV, certified copies of diplomas and certificates, and a personal letter describing yourself and your relevant experience (maximum 2 pages). The application should also contain a summary of your master thesis and eventual publications, and contact information for, or letters from at least two referees. In your cover letter specifically explain how much full-waveform inversion/seismic data processing related experience you have.

Applications must be send to with topic "SmartExploration research assistant"
