Mapping Geologist

About Us

IGS is a rapidly growing independent geoscience consultancy formed as a 'spin out' company from the British Geological Survey in 2010. Our work includes large, complex, multi-disciplinary geo-thematic and strategic-level studies with National Governments, through their Geological Survey Organisations, and International Development Agencies such as the World Bank and DFID, as well as competitively priced, quality services to the commercial mineral exploration sector. Further information about the company can be seen on our website: www.igsint.com

About the Role

Due to our continued success in attracting new business, a vacancy has arisen for a Mapping Geologist to join our team. The candidate will most probably be based at our office in Keyworth, near Nottingham in the UK, but a non-UK based location may be considered.

You will be required to travel extensively for this role, and particularly be in a position to undertake long periods of fieldwork, particular in Africa. Our immediate need is to identify experienced mapping geologists for a project in Mozambique among other regional locations. Applicants must have field-based mapping skills in a range of geological environments, especially in areas of high-grade basement with a complex tectonic history.

About You

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Good first degree (2.1 or above) in geoscience and either a MSc or PhD in geology.
  • 3-5 years of post graduate experience in systematic field mapping, which may include field work towards a higher degree.
  • Experience of working in a variety of countries on geological mapping and/or mineral-related projects will be an advantage.
  • Excellent project management, people and communication skills, both oral and written. The post involves team working, therefore you should be able to work effectively with others.
  • Proficiency in Arc-GIS is critical, while experience of digital mapping and other related geological software applications will be highly valued.
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written. Additional language skills, specifically French and Arabic, are also desirable.
  • A full driving licence.
  • Experience of mentoring or practical instruction of other staff is important.

You must be prepared to travel extensively to a variety of countries, including Mozambique. Eligibility to work and live in the UK will be advantageous but is not absolutely essential.

Pay and Conditions

We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience, skills and professional background. While this is advertised as a full-time post, we may consider applications from those who require more flexible arrangements. IGS is a corporately responsible equal opportunities employer.
