Assistant Professor (career position) in economic geology/mineral deposits

Start date/duration

  • As soon as possible
  • Initially for 6 years. This position involves a qualification agreement and will be converted into a permanent Associate Professor position in case of a positive evaluation at the end of the qualification period

  • Institute of Mineralogy and Petrography at the University of Innsbruck

Extent of employment

  • 40 hours per week

Main tasks

  • Independent research preferentially in the field of mineral deposits/economic geology
  • Teaching on Bachelor, Master and PhD level
  • Supervision of Bachelor and Master students/co-supervision of PhD students
  • Academic self-administration

Required qualifications

  • Master and PhD degree in Earth Sciences
  • Excellent scientific achievements after completion of the PhD thesis
  • Proven research experience and international visibility in economic geology/mineral deposits preferably in combined field and analytical research
  • International research cooperations
  • Experience in the acquisition and/or management of third-party funded projects
  • Several months of relevant professional experience during or after completion of the PhD
  • Commitment to teaching
  • Experience in the (co)supervision of Bachelor and Master projects
  • German language skills (min. B2 level) or willingness to acquire these within 2 years after start of the employment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language
  • Social competence
  • Excellent team and communication skills

Tenure-Track model:

The vacant post offers a continuous scientific career up to an associate professor. A key component of this tenure track model is the so called "Qualifizierungsvereinbarung" (qualification agreement). This agreement shall be concluded as the case may be at the latest one year after being employed. More information:


An initial salary of € 4.062 p.m.* shall be offered for this position. In the following, the conclusion of the qualification agreement will entitle to an increased salary of € 4.599,60 p.m.* and the fulfilment of the agreed qualification objectives will entitle to an increased salary of € 4.987,20 p.m.*.
