Manager of Outreach and Communications



IODP Management International (IODP-MI; see www.iodp.org) seeks a highly motivated and experienced individual with proven, excellent communication skills to join our group overseeing IODP data and communications.

Position summary: The Manager of Outreach and Communications will coordinate IODP media relations; liaise with IODP Implementing Organizations (IOs) and national program Outreach Coordinators; oversee IODP-MI event planning and scheduling; design and produce visually stimulating materials for effective message communication; develop promotional materials for the public, media, and scientific audiences; perform public relations development through participation in print and electronic media outlets and at appropriate scientific conferences; participate in maintaining informative and dynamic web content; develop press releases, brochures and other public relations materials.

Qualifications and experience: A strategic thinker with professional interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build coalitions, and communicate effectively with diverse audiences; ability to work collaboratively and independently; demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks; previous experience in scientific communications is essential and academic credentials in communications, journalism or public relations are desired; experience writing press releases and writing for the web; a demonstrable capacity to reach a wide range of target audiences via multi-media outreach is highly desirable; refined writing skills and articulate public speaking ability (English fluency required, multi-lingual abilities desired); at least 3 years experience in outreach and communication for a scientific or technology oriented organization.

Workplace and compensation: This position will report to the Managing Director of IODP Data and Communications, and will be located at the IODP-MI office space at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology-Etchujima Campus in Tokyo, Japan. Relocation expenses and competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and cost of living will be provided. Frequent international travel must be anticipated.
