The International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) is an internationally recognized centre of excellence in international education, which, as of January 2010, will become a full faculty within the University of Twente, both based in Enschede, the Netherlands. ITC aims at capacity building and institutional development of professional and academic organizations and individuals specifically in countries that are economically and/or technologically less developed. The education is based on knowledge exchange between scientific and professional organizations in less developed countries on the one hand and those in the Western world on the other, whereby ITC acts as a two-directional gateway for knowledge exchange. The knowledge field of ITC is geo-information science and Earth observation, which consists of a combination of tools and methods for the collection - through aerospace survey techniques -, storage and processing of geo-spatial data, for the dissemination and use of these data and of services based on these data. ITC's approach is application-oriented, directed at finding solutions for and strengthening civil society in addressing issues of local, national and global dimensions such as the multifunctional use of scarce resources, including space, the effects of climate change and environmental security.

The Department of Earth System Analysis (ESA) of ITC aims to provide reliable geoinformation for the understanding of Earth dynamic processes in three dimensions and over time through the integration of Earth observation data and spatial models. It strives to contribute to sustainable development by analyzing this information to support the mitigation and management of natural disasters, the management of Earth resources and impact on the environment.

In the department a vacancy exists for the position of

Assistant Professor

Disaster risk management and climate change

Main tasks

The research group of Disaster Risk Management (DRM) deals with the entire chain of disaster risk reduction: the assessment and quantification of natural hazards, vulnerabilities of natural and anthropogenic systems exposed to those hazards, the resulting risk, and the consequences for disaster preparedness and mitigation. Climate change is one of the main drivers in this context, as it changes both the frequency and magnitude of natural hazards, as well as the effects of disasters in urban and rural areas. We are looking for a researcher that can strengthen our work by giving a clear impulse in geoinformatics-based DRM in the climate change context.

Requirements

The prospective candidate must have a PhD in a field of applied earth sciences or natural sciences, with proven expertise in the climate change field, and a strong affinity for the societal consequences of natural disasters. The candidate must be skilled in Geo Information and Earth Observation techniques.

The above candidate will teach and supervise students at post-graduate, MSc and PhD level, develop teaching materials (also for distance education), acquire and participate in projects in (or related to problems in) developing countries. The candidate should have didactical skills and experience in teaching in an academic environment combined with a good scientific track record, and preferably have working experience in developing countries and the willingness to undertake international travel.

Our Offer

ITC offers an inspiring and challenging international environment. The successful candidate will be employed for a period of four years. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreemnt (CAO) of the Dutch Universities. Gross monthly salary depends on experience and qualifications, and ranges from € 3195, to € 4970, exclusive of allowances in accordance with the job profile Assistant Professor level 1 (UD1), under the University System for Job Classification (UJC).
