Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is the result of the merger of the University of Karlsruhe and the Research Center, Karlsruhe. It is a unique institution in Germany, which combines the mission of a university with that of a large-scale research center of the Helmholtz Association. With 9.000 employees, KIT is one of the largest research and education institutions worldwide.

The Institute for Applied Geosciences (AGW) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has an open

PhD position (50 %)
hydro-mechanical coupled processes
in fractured rocks

at salary grade TV-L E13. The duration of the position is 3 years and can be filled immediately.

The main objective of this research project is to improve our understanding of coupled hydro-mechanical processes in fractured rocks. The project will investigate strength and deformation properties of anisotropic fractured rock masses and how these impact fluid transport. Special emphasis will be placed on changing fracture properties during formation, opening and sealing. The research will be based on extensive data sets; and will include intensive numerical modeling using continuum, distinct element and/or particle flow code techniques.

The successful candidate must have an MSc in earth sciences, environmental or geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, physics or a related field. Ideally, the candidate should have knowledge
and experience in hydro-mechanical coupled processes, rock mechanics and numerical modeling.
She/He should be a team player, have good communication skills and take on responsibility in an international and interdisciplinary research team.

KIT is pursuing a gender equality policy. Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. If qualified, handicapped applicants will be preferred.

Please send your complete application, which includes 1) cover letter, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) complete course grades and transcripts and 4) contact details of at least two referees, as one single pdf-file by e-mail or regular post until 31 August 2013 to:
