We are looking for the Institute of Applied Geosciences (AGW) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), starting as soon as possible, limited to three years, a
The research focus in the Department of Engineering Geology is currently on geothermal energy, nuclear waste disposal, landslides and fractured reservoirs.
During this PhD program the candidate will develop a new methodology that will allow quantification of hydro-geo-mechanical subsurface properties using the groundwater response to Earth and atmospheric tides. The candidate will further use numerical simulations to test the capabilities of this approach and compare the results with those from established hydrogeological and geophysical investigation methods. The work will be supported by experienced academics from international institutions, namely Cardiff University (United Kingdom), UNSW Sydney as well as CSIRO Adelaide (Australia). International travel to collaboration partners as well as presentation of progress and results at conferences are required. The position is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG).
You must have a graduate degree (MSc or equivalent) in a relevant field such as applied geology, structural geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, geophysics or in a related discipline. A high motivation for solving problems is required. Scientific programming as well as numerical modelling skills are of advantage. Candidates should further have the drive for independent thinking and self-learning as well as the ability to work in teams.
