Senior Lecturer/Lecturer (1 Post)

School of Geological Sciences

The appointee will teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of geochemistry and economic geology. Additional teaching duties will include contributions to introductory geology courses and supervision of undergraduate field schools. S/he must have excellent verbal and communication skills.

The appointee will also be expected to contribute to existing research within the School by attracting external funding and post-graduate students. To facilitate research, the School can offer in-house access to a JEOL JXA8800 electron microprobe, Philips XRF and XRD, and a Perkin Elmer Sciex 6100 ICP-MS with LA system. The appointee will be required to manage the XRF and ICP-MS instrumentation.

The line manager of this post will be the Head of School.

The School has 12 currently funded academic posts and produces graduates with skills in Geology, Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology. Further information on current staff and their research interests is available on the School website at http://www.geology.ukzn.ac.za

Minimum Requirements:

Senior Lecturer

  • A PhD in geology.
  • Laboratory experience involving XRF and ICP-MS;
  • Evidence of recent peer-reviewed research output in SAPSE accredited journals appropriate for this level;
  • Successful supervision of post-graduate students;
  • Lecturing experience at tertiary level.

Lecturer

  • MSc by research with specialisation in appropriate fields of geology;
  • Laboratory experience involving XRF and ICP-MS;
  • Evidence of recent peer-reviewed journal article in SAPSE accredited journal.
