Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Sedimentary Geology
School of Geological Sciences

Durban (South Africa)


The School of Geological Sciences invites applications for a position in sedimentary geology. Areas of interest include but are not limited to sedimentary processes and depositional environments, sediment geochemistry, provenance analysis, basin architecture and sedimentary ore deposits and fossil fuels.

The School produces highly trained graduates in the Geosciences. Undergraduate and Honours courses are offered in Geology and Ore Deposits, Engineering and Environmental Geology, and Marine Geoscience. The School has strong links with industry and it is expected that the successful candidate will further develop such links to promote scholarship and research.

DUTIES:

The incumbent will be tasked with teaching in the broad field of sedimentary geology at all levels, using curricula in keeping with modern developments in that field and will assist in developing discipline-wide postgraduate teaching programmes. Additional teaching duties can include supervision of field mapping camps and introductory courses in geology to 1st year students.

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an active research programme that will involve post-graduate students and attract external funding. To facilitate research, the School can offer access to a Malvern Particle Sizer, JEOL JXA8800 electron microprobe, Philips XRF and XRD, and a Perkin Elmer Sciex 6100 ICP-MS with LA system. Access to geophysical marine survey tools is possible through the Marine Geoscience Unit attached to the School.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer

  • A PhD in Geology specialising in sedimentary geology
  • 3-5 years relevant research experience including evidence of recent peer-reviewed research output in internationally recognised journals and successful post-graduate supervision
  • Lecturing experience at tertiary level

ADVANTAGES:

  • Active NRF rating (South African based applicants)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer

  • MSc in Geology, specialising in sedimentary geology
  • Two-years relevant research experience including evidence of recent peer-reviewed research output in internationally recognised journals

ADVANTAGES:

  • A PhD in Geology specialising in sedimentary geology. Consideration will be given to applicants who are currently registered for a Doctorate in sedimentary geology
  • Lecturing experience at tertiary level
