The School of Geological Sciences invites applications for a permanent academic post in Engineering Geology. The main areas of interest are engineering geology and geotechnical engineering related to slope stability, assessment of rock fabric and influence on physical properties, geohazard investigations and GIS applications in hazard assessment, engineering geological mapping and the investigation of South African problem soil types.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
All applicants should have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
- A PhD in the field of engineering geology
- 5-10 years research experience in the fields of rock mechanics/soil mechanics/geotechnical engineering including evidence of: a sustained record of peer-reviewed research papers in international journals; successful post-graduate supervision at masters and/or doctoral level; the ability to secure research funding.
- Lecturing experience at tertiary level.
SENIOR LECTURER
- A PhD in the field of engineering geology;
- 3-5 years research experience in the fields of rock mechanics/soil mechanics/geotechnical engineering including evidence of recent peer-reviewed research output in international journals and successful post-graduate supervision.
- Lecturing experience at tertiary level.
LECTURER
- MSc in engineering geology or a related field. Consideration will be given to applicants without a master's degree who are currently registered for a Doctorate in engineering geology.
- 2 years relevant research experience including evidence of recent peer-reviewed research output.
DUTIES:
The School of Geological Sciences at UKZN offers dedicated undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering geology that include rock mechanics, soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. The incumbents will be tasked with teaching in one of these fields at senior undergraduate and post-graduate levels using curricula in keeping with modern developments in that field. Additional teaching duties will include responsibility for general geology courses to Civil Engineers and assistance with student field schools.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidates will be expected to develop and maintain an active research programme that will involve post-graduate students and attract external funding. To facilitate research, the School has a compression rock testing machine, rock discontinuity shear apparatus and a well equipped soils laboratory. It can also offer access to a Malvern Particle Sizer, JEOL JXA8800 electron microprobe, Philips XRF and XRD, and a Perkin Elmer Sciex 6100 ICP-MS with LA system. The School has a site licence for the complete suite of Rocscience programs.
