The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering (www.ggl.ulaval.ca)
consists of 12 professors, two of whom hold Research Chairs and two others with Leadership Teaching Chairs. The department is host to two undergraduate programs, namely Geology and Geological Engineering. It also offers two masters and a doctoral program in Earth Sciences. The student body includes over 150 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. Research activities within the department revolve around four main research themes: ground water, geo-hazards, mineral resources and geomaterials. Reducing the impacts of geo-hazards on society constitutes one of the strategic research fields within the research development plan (2015-2020) of the university.
- Tenure-track position;
- Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in French in the field of geology and geological engineering;
- Supervise and coordinate graduate student research in the field of geology and geological engineering;
- Develop and secure external funding for a high-quality research program in the area of geo-hazards and ground stability risks and consequences;
- Assume an active role within the department by contributing to internal administrative tasks that are often beyond normal teaching and research duties.
The selected candidate will have a solid expertise in Earth Sciences, including Quaternary geology and geotechnical investigation, with a specialty in geo-hazards related to ground instability.
Furthermore, the selected candidate will have to meet the following criteria:
- have been awarded an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in geological engineering or in a related field and a doctoral degree in a field that is appropriate to the position;
- demonstrate a solid track-record with regards to terrestrial and/or offshore field and laboratory experiments;
- demonstrate the ability to develop, fund and manage a high-quality and high-impact research program;
- provide evidence of ability to collaborate within multi-disciplinary research teams and networks and demonstrate a positive contribution to these research entities;
- provide evidence of being skilled in the development of high-quality course material using rich and engaging content for regular and continuing education;
- demonstrate strong communication skills by communicating clearly the results and impact of relevant research achievements;
- provide evidence of being able to provide excellent teaching in the fields of geology and geological engineering;
- demonstrate a good working competency in the French language (written and oral) or provide a concise plan to reach this level within one year;
- be a member in good standing with the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec. Otherwise, the selected candidate will be required to provide a concise plan that will demonstrate that this requirement can be met within a period of time which cannot exceed the initial contract
Salary and benefits
Academic rank will be assessed commensurate with experience and salary will be determined according to the collective agreement in place at the time of hire.
