Metal Earth Laboratory Research Associate,
6-year Position

The first francophone university in North America, Université Laval is amongst the top-ranked comprehensive universities in Canada. Recognised for its leadership and high-achievements in education and research, it offers a convivial and diverse environment in the heart of Quebec City, a UNESCO World Heritage City of 750,000 inhabitants. The university community counts amongst its ranks over 45,000 students and offers an engaging work environment which was recently ranked by Forbes magazine as one of Canada's best employers.

With CAD $104 million in funding provided by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) and through strategic partnerships led by Laurentian University, with 4 Canadian universities, 6 government geological surveys and 3 international research centres, Metal Earth is the largest ever mineral exploration research project undertaken in Canada. Metal Earth seeks to identify and understand the processes responsible for Earth's differential metal endowment during the Precambrian. This research initiative aims to transform our understanding of Earth's early evolution and how we explore for metals.

The RA will integrate a team that will conduct research to compare the stable isotope signature left by fluid flow along transects cutting across well- and poorly-mineralized segments of major crustal faults in the Superior Province. The study will address the differences in fluid flow regime, source of fluids, or conditions of fluid/rock exchange, that explain the endowment in metals of the major crustal faults. The RA will be responsible for stable isotope analyses. The RA will preferably hold a MSc with strong fundamental and laboratory expertise in stable isotope geochemistry. Experience with fluorination extraction methods will be a strong asset. The 1-year contract will start as soon as possible and is renewable yearly for up to 6 years.

Salary will be determined according to the collective agreement in place at the time of hire. Salary range is from $40 000 to $65 000 per year plus benefits.

Candidates should prepare a complete candidacy package which includes: (1) a long-form CV that includes publications and research achievements, (2) academic transcripts, (3) letter of motivation, (4) contact details and the names of three referees. The full application package, should be sent electronically as a PDF document to explomin@ggl.ulaval.ca
