Environmental Geophysics Postdoctoral Scholar - 91244

Organization: GO-Energy Geosciences

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Energy Geosciences Division (https://eesa.lbl.gov/our-divisions/energy-geosciences/) has an opening for an Environmental Geophysics Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will develop and implement novel monitoring methodologies needed to improve the multi-scale quantification and prediction of geophysical, hydrological, and geomechanical properties and processes in the critical zone. You will work with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists to advance the predictive understanding of subsurface and surface dynamics important for managing water resources, water and carbon cycle, contaminations, and natural hazards. Your focus will be on:

  • Improving the estimation of hydrological and geomechanical properties, and prediction of future trajectories using hydrological, geotechnical, and geophysical ground-based measurements and modeling. A particular focus is on the estimation of soil deformation and slope instabilities in natural and infrastructure systems using novel distributed and networked sensor technology developed at Berkeley Lab. This may involve active contribution to the development of the system, through validation of or enhancements to the system architecture.
  • Development of a novel strategy integrating point-scale, geophysical, and remote sensing data to improve the spatial and temporal coverage and resolution to quantify and predict complex surface and subsurface dynamics. A particular focus is on the integration of multiple types of data in mechanistic and/or machine learning models to provide real-time and future prediction of surface deformation caused by slope instabilities or soil redistribution and determining their underlying subsurface processes.

What You Will Do:

  • Advance acquisition, processing, data assimilation, and inversion techniques for advanced monitoring and quantification of complex critical zone processes.
  • Develop an approach for the integration of hydrological and geophysical data in mechanistic models or machine learning algorithms for extracting key information, and quantifying and predicting hydrological and/or geomechanical processes.
  • Integrate multiple types of data to improve the spatiotemporal resolution and coverage of parameter estimations and predictions.
  • Engage as a member of a large, multidisciplinary research team that includes geophysicists, hydrologists, and computational scientists.
  • Author peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports.

What Is Required:

  • Ph.D. in environmental engineering/science, geophysics, geology, electrical engineering, and computer science, or equivalent discipline; or equivalent work experience.
  • Peer-reviewed publications and international research exposure.
  • Understanding of surface and subsurface geophysical and hydrological processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of new methodologies for improved understanding and quantification of shallow subsurface processes using geophysical and hydrological datasets.
  • Strong understanding of subsurface geophysical, hydrological, and geomechanical processes.
  • Familiarity with forwarding and inverse modeling of hydrological and geophysical properties and/or data-driven prediction of hydrological processes.
  • Familiar with using state-of-the-art field sensors and platforms such as geophysical acquisition systems and/or remote sensing data.
  • Ability to author peer-reviewed journal publications.
  • Ability to bring innovative ideas and to develop novel approaches.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on November 6, 2020.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
