Staff Associate Job Position



The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University located in the Lamont Campus in Palisades, Rockland County, NY is recruiting a Staff Associate to develop scientific research products, design and test visual representations and graphical user interfaces for delivery of data and information according to current research projects requirements and to coordinate on-line scientific content management in consultation with research staff and web developers in subject areas related to human-environment interactions including population, poverty, health, conservation, sustainability and others.

Responsibilities: Collect and analyze research project data, documents, and other products, and provide assistance to research staff in the design of effective and intuitive visual organization of data and graphic interfaces for the delivery of data and related project information via the Internet; Evaluate, review and provide quality control for the visual aspects and compliance with standards in research projects web sites; Coordinate the design and implement common content types and information architectures across major research projects web sites in consultation with research staff with a particular focus on improving usability; Maintain and improve an enterprise scientific content management system according to project requirements; Coordinate improvements in web standards compliant mapping interfaces in support of multiple research projects and improve the visualization and analysis capabilities for geospatial datasets; Improve and support web developer environment to efficiently implement and maintain research project websites.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor degree in computer graphics, graphics design or related field and four years related experience or Master's degree and two years of experience is required. Strong Graphical User Interface (GUI) design skills and working experience with web development and graphic design tools, proficiency in writing clean, efficient, and standards compliant HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript code, and experience with developing dynamic web sites using server-side scripting languages is required. Strong oral and written communication skills in English is required. Experience in managing web development environment including web servers, application servers, and IDE tools is preferred. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and familiarity with social science, remote sensing, and spatial data is a plus.

Annual salary will be commensurate with skills and experience. Columbia University benefits afforded with this Officer of Research position.
