High-Pressure Experimental Geoscientist

We seek an outstanding high-pressure experimentalist to spearhead the development and exploitation of high-pressure experimental systems in the high-pressure laboratory at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Macquarie University. The appointment will be on the academic scale as mixed service and research with no teaching requirement. It will be fixed term up to 4 years with a possibility of further employment. Application deadline is 17th December, 2018.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the high-pressure experimental laboratories and providing support for the high-pressure experimental program of the Australian Laureate Fellowship project Deep Earth Cycles of Carbon, Water and Nitrogen.

Service duties will include taking responsibility for the safe operation of all types of high-pressure equipment in the experimental laboratories; maintaining the high-pressure laboratories in a high state of readiness for experimental use, including ordering and advising in the choice of experimental consumables; scheduling and supervising use of the experimental facilities; and instruction of postgraduate students, post-doctoral research associates and visitors in the use of the facilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue a program of experimental high-pressure research allied broadly with the theme of Deep Earth Cycles of volatile elements and in collaboration with department staff.

About You

The ideal person has a PhD in a relevant subject, an extensive background in the use of piston-cylinder, multi-anvil, and Laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Experience with spectroscopic and diffraction measurements and a background in Earth or Materials science would be an advantage, as would interest and experience in using synchrotron and neutron facilities. We are seeking an individual whose research interests and experience complement the research programs of current Macquarie University scientists.

About Us

We are currently expanding our high-pressure laboratory and research program with the installation of new piston-cylinder, multi-anvil and laser heated diamond anvil systems, as well as high-pressure deformation systems at the Australian synchrotron and neutron facilities at ANSTO.

Macquarie University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences hosts the ARC Centre of Excellence for Core to Crust Fluid Systems and the Macquarie Planetary Research Centre. It incorporates world-class geochemical and numerical simulation facilities. Department members emphasize cross-links between geochemistry, geophysics and petrology in mantle and lithosphere studies.
