Post-doctoral Research Fellows
At Macquarie University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, we have up to three exciting opportunities for motivated and proactive post-doctoral researchers to work with Professor Stephen Foley on the Australian Laureate Fellowship project Deep Earth Cycles of Carbon, Water and Nitrogen. The successful candidates will pursue a program of research into some aspect of the deep cycles of these volatile elements: this may include high-pressure experimentation, trace element or isotope geochemistry, or a combination of the two.
We are seeking outstanding post-doctoral geoscientists who will actively contribute to a team effort to produce a rounded understanding of the roles of carbon, water and nitrogen in the deep Earth. To build on your geochemical or experimental research aspirations, your interest may be in one of the cycles (carbon, water and nitrogen) or a combination of two or more. The whole program will include projects on the subduction process and incipient melting of the Earth's mantle. Experience with high-pressure experimental systems, particularly piston-cylinder and/or multi-anvil apparatuses will hold you in good stead for experimental work, whereas experience in hands-on trace element or isotope analysis will be essential for geochemical projects. If you are a team player with a proactive nature, then this is a role you will thrive in and a research group you will enjoy working with.
Macquarie's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is currently expanding its high-Pressure Experimental facilities with the installation of new piston-cylinder, multi-anvil and laser heated diamond anvil systems in a new laboratory to open early in 2019. We have a strong tradition in microbeam mineral and rock analysis, including electron microprobe and SEM, with several Laser-ICP-MS and TIMS instruments.
Macquarie University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences hosts the ARC Centre of Excellence for Core to Crust Fluid Systems and the Macquarie Planetary Research Centre. Department members emphasize cross-links between geochemistry, geophysics and petrology in mantle and lithosphere studies.
