(One Year Contractual Position)


The CREAIT (Core Research Equipment and Instrument Training) Network maintains and operates thematic clusters of multi-user, scientific research instrumentation in a variety of scientific laboratories at Memorial University. The ICP-MS Laboratory, as part of "The Earth Resources Research and Analysis" (TERRA) Facility uses an ELAN DRCII for solution ICP-MS analyses, along with associated chemistry labs for sample preparation. This facility mainly analyzes rocks, waters, soils, and organic materials for trace elements. Complimentary equipment includes a Bruker S8 Tiger X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer and a Finnigan MAT 262 Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer. Current research in the laboratory is concerned with geochemistry, mineral deposits and environmental studies in various departments including Earth Sciences, Engineering, Biology and Archaeology.


Reporting to the Operations Manager, CREAIT Network, the successful applicant will perform professional and technical work in a research support capacity involving the day-to-day operation of the solution ICP-MS laboratory and associated chemistry labs. Duties include maintaining the instrument at optimal performance levels; consulting with instrument engineers for trouble-shooting and repairs; preparing rock samples for analyses using various chemical dissolution procedures; ensuring an adequate supply of clean labware and chemicals for analysis; training and overseeing users; performing data acquisition and processing; participating in collaborative method development with other TERRA staff and university researchers; and performing other related duties as required.


Experience (1-3 years) in solution ICP-MS research work; completion of a Master's degree in Earth Sciences, Chemistry or relevant discipline; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Familiarity with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; experience training students in the use of research instrumentation; and a proven research background in ICP-MS and/or related techniques would be considered assets.

SALARY: $59,856 -$81,622 per annum (Management and Professional)
