MSc opportunities: Hibernia Tectonostratigraphy Research Group

Several fully funded 2-year MSc opportunities in sedimentology and tectonostratigraphy are currently open at the Earth Sciences Department, Memorial University, under supervision of Dr. David Lowe. Dr. Lowe is the Hibernia Chair Hibernia Chair in Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins at Memorial University of Newfoundland and runs the Hibernia Tectonostratigraphy Research Group. His research focuses on the reconstruction of terrestrial sedimentary systems and the response of sedimentary systems to tectonics and climate change.

Several MSc opportunities are available, with proposed project areas in Eastern Canada and Northeast US. Potential projects include: (1) Investigations and reconstruction of Triassic semiarid fluvial and lacustrine systems in the Fundy Basin, Nova Scotia; (2) tectonostratigraphy and syn-tectonic sedimentation of Neoproterozoic strata, Avalon Zone, Newfoundland; (3) facies analysis and stratal reconstruction of Cambrian deep marine clastic systems, Meguma Zone, Nova Scotia; (4) provenance, facies analysis and tectonostratigraphy of Cambrian-Ordovician Laurentian shelf and slope clastics, Newfoundland, Quebec and Vermont; (5) syn-tectonic sedimentary structures and seismites from Cambrian strata, Ontario and New York.

Projects will expose the MSc candidates to clastic sedimentology, facies analysis, drone-assisted architectural analysis of outcrops, sedimentary system reconstructions, and provenance analysis (including, but not limited to petrography and U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircons).

MSc candidates are expected to have some experience or strong interest in field-based mapping, sedimentology, and stratigraphy. Analytical geochemistry and/or geochronology experience is an asset. Experience in scientific publishing, presenting research at conferences and science outreach are considered assets for this position.
