Fully funded NERC PhD studentship, MMU PhD Studentship

Sedimentology and diagenesis of a modern tropical carbonate platform system
Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences

Applications are invited for a 3-year fully funded PhD studentship with the title: "Impacts of clastic sediment input on the sedimentology and diagenesis of a modern tropical carbonate platform system: Rodrigues, SW Indian Ocean", supervised by Prof Kevin Taylor and Dr Chris Perry.

The aim of this PhD is to test the hypothesis that the delivery of iron oxides from land-derived clastic inputs will significantly modify sediment and carbonate grain diagenesis in modern carbonate sediments, with implications for element and carbonate cycling.

Applicants should have (or be expected to achieve) at least an upper second class degree in the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Please note that due to funding restrictions, only UK or EU citizens who have lived in the UK for the past 3 years are eligible to apply for this studentship. Holders will register for an MPhil/PhD degree, and the University will provide the home tuition fees for these awards (circa £3,300 p.a. for 2008/2009), and a subsistence bursary (£12,940 p.a for 2008/09).

Further details of the projects can be found at http://www.egs.mmu.ac.uk/users/ess/index.htm

Start Date: October 1st 2008

Closing date for receipt of applications: Monday 12th May 2008.
