Geoscience Software Engineer

Midland Valley provides structural geology software and consulting services to the upstream oil, gas and mineral industries worldwide. We are actively expanding our software development team and are looking for a Geoscience Software Engineer to help enhancing and developing our next generation Move product.

This is an exciting opportunity for a multi-disciplined individual to join our dynamic team. You will undertake a software engineering role, and play a key part in the development of our core Move technology. You will also be expected to interact closely with geology specialists in our company as you help to develop and improve algorithms and workflows, user interface, and visualisation aspects of our world leading product. Furthermore, the software team is responsible to support documentation and testing, as well as maintaining the internal CI build and deployment system.

Whether you are a recent graduate, or a seasoned professional with a commercial track record we would equally consider you for this role, as long as you possess good numerical and problem solving skills. The applicant must have achieved a minimum of a good first degree in one of Computing Science, GIS, Geology, or Geophysics.

Experience in developing earth science related products and libraries would be advantageous, but is not essential. We are looking for creative software individuals, who want to lead and innovate and share in our success.

The applicant must demonstrate technical competency in some of the following:

  • Windows or Linux platform development skills; MSVS or GCC; Qt Creator
  • C++ programming and design; OO design and UML; STL and Boost libraries.
  • GUI development using Qt ; Qt Creator ; Qt Designer, Qt Quick ; QML
  • 2D & 3D Geometrical modelling experience; Geometrical APIs or toolkits including CGAL.
  • MATLAB or Python or Excel scripting of mathematical or geological problems.
  • GIS driver experience; ESRI or ArcGIS Desktop or Pro, GlobalMapper; MapInfo; Python scripts
  • GIS toolkit development experience; GDAL, ESRI API, MapBox API, Google Maps API, Javascript
  • 3D graphics toolkits experience; OpenGL or OpenSceneGraph or Q3D or Inventor
  • Multithreading experience; GPU programming using CUDA or OpenCL or Vulkan or Shaders.
  • CI experience including cmake, JIRA, Perforce/Git SCC, Jenkins, JAVA, bash, batch files, TestRail
