Associate Professor in Earth and Planetary Physics

A faculty position is available in the Earth and Planetary Physics Group of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University. The appointment will be at the associate professor level and the successful candidate is expected to begin work on 1st April 2011. Details of the position and requirements for candidates are given below. Please feel free to pass this announcement on to any interested persons including potential candidates.

Description of Post

The Earth and Planetary Physics Group at Nagoya University carries out a wide range of research in Earth and planetary sciences (from planetary formation to dynamics of the Earth system) with its main research tools founded in physics. With this new appointment, the Group plans to strengthen its contribution to research in the developing broad fields of planetary science, complex-system geophysics, and evolution of life-supporting planets. Planetary science focuses on understanding the nature of the Earth as one of a variety of possible planets. Complex-system geophysics is concerned with important fundamental geophysical problems such as understanding the properties of complex fluids or the dynamics of fracture. Evolution of life-supporting planets aims to clarify the conditions necessary for the development of habitable planets and the coevolution of life. Please refer to the home page given in note (*1) below for more details.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other members of the Group (*2) on research in Earth and planetary physics, and will be expected to contribute to research in at least one of the above-mentioned three broad fields. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to teaching at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and hold undergraduate courses for the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, with emphasis on experimental geophysics. Thus, it is preferable to have a track record of experimental research in Earth and planetary physics.

Required Qualifications

  1. Ph D or equivalent degree
  2. A proven track record of research in Earth and planetary physics
  3. Ability to teach undergraduate courses in experimental geophysics (preferably with a track record of experimental research in Earth and planetary physics)
  4. Japanese language ability sufficient to carry out education and research instruction (non-native speakers are expected to have achieved this level within about 5 years)

Applicants Procedure

Applicants should submit the following documents:

  1. CV with a recent photo and a contact e-mail address.
  2. A summary of experience in research and education (approximately 700 words long)
  3. An indexed list of research output separated into the following categories
    • Refereed original research papers and reviews
    • Non-refereed original research papers and reviews
    • Book contributions
    • Other relevant publications
  4. A review of plans and aspirations for research and education?approximately 700 words long?
  5. List of external research grants obtained and awards wined
  6. Copies or reprints of main research papers (about 5 in total)

The above material should be sent to the following address both by registered mail and by PDF files attached to e-mail.
