Job Description

The Earth Environmental Systems Group of Nagoya University focuses on the mechanism of changes in earth and environmental systems and the design of a sustainable earth-society system based on the treatment of the Earth as a single integrated system of nature and human society. More specifically, the faculty members of this group work in the fields of earth observation by remote sensing, designing sustainable local communities and evaluation of forest belowground ecosystems under changing environmental conditions. Our department seeks to employ a person who has made significant achievements in a related field and can promote research closely related to the speciality of at least one of the present members of the Group. The applicant is also expected to actively participate in a new academic endeavor named "Clinical Environmental Studies", which is an interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research and educational activity established as part of the Global COE Program From Earth System Science to Basic and Clinical Environmental Studies at Nagoya University. The successful applicant is also expected to cooperate with the Education and Research Center of Sustainable Co-Development and other departments in the Graduate school of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements.

  • Ph D or equivalent in a relevant field
  • Sufficient Japanese ability for instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels (where this is not possible at the time of appointment this level of language proficiency should be reached within five years)

Application materials required (in Japanese or English)

  • Curriculum vitae (this should include age, e-mail address and other contact details, summary of academic and professional career from high school including the date of university graduation, and be accompanied by a recent photo of the applicant).
  • A summary of the main educational and research activities of the applicant (English summaries should be about 400 words).

Where applicable, both of the above documents should include descriptions of experience, either as a student or instructor, with the special graduate school educational support programs such as Program for Leading Graduate Schools, or the Global COE program.

  • List of publications and related scientific output, which should be divided into the following 4 types.
    • Refereed papers and review articles (where available include the number of citations for each paper and the name of the database used).
    • Non-refereed papers and review articles.
    • Books
    • Other relevant material
  • Outline of aspirations and plans for research and education after taking office (outlines in English should be about 400 words)
  • Names and contact information for 2 referees who can provide an independent assessment of the candidate.
  • Copies of 3 significant publications (attach reprints or photocopies)
  • A CD-R or DVD included in all above documents

Department Outline

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences consists of the Earth and Planetary Science Division (EPS) and Hydrospheric-Atmospheric Science Division (HAS). The present position is available in the EPS Division, which consists of four separate Groups (or koza): Earth Systems Science, Geology and Geobiology, Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry, and Earth and Planetary Physics.
