The School of Environmental and Life Sciences (SELS) comprises six disciplines: Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Management, Applied Sciences and Geography and Environmental Studies. SELS is one of the University's largest schools, offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. SELS is also highly active in research and research training with substantial numbers of Research Higher Degree students. This position will be housed within the Discipline of Earth Sciences, which contributes courses to the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management degree programs.
The current period is one of significant growth within Earth Sciences at the University, evident by the recent establishment of the Institute for Frontier Geosciences. It coincides with a move toward strengthening the University's capacity to teach and undertake significant research in the fields of: (i) Structural geology and geodynamics; (ii) Resource geology, (iii) Climate and palaeoclimate, iv) Landscape evolution modelling, and (iv) Petrology/geochemical modelling. The focus of the Discipline is on excellence in teaching and research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are currently ranked as ERA 5 in the research areas of Geology (0403) and Environmental Geoscience and Physical Geography (0406).
A highly motivated candidate is sought to develop innovative research programs and deliver teaching and research excellence within the Earth Science Discipline. We are seeking an Earth Scientist who is an active researcher in a field complementary to our existing research groups with demonstrated capacity and potential to publish research outcomes and gain competitive grant funding. The Discipline will consider candidates with demonstrated research excellence across a broad range of research interests but priority will be given to candidates with research focus in structural geology / geodynamics. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake research aligned with the interests of the Discipline of Earth Sciences as well as to expand research directions through national and international collaborations.
This position is based at our Callaghan campus in Newcastle, NSW and is available on a full-time, continuing basis from January 2014.

Academic Level B $84,700 to $100,582 per annum or Academic Level C $103,757 to $119,641 per annum, plus a generous employer superannuation contribution of up to 17%. Salary level within this range will be dependent on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant.
