The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), based in Trondheim, is the central national institute for knowledge of bedrock, mineral resources, surface deposits and groundwater of mainland Norway and of the near-surface geology of the Norwegian continental shelf. The survey's tasks include geological, geophysical and geochemical mapping, development and maintenance of databases, research, information activities and advice to governmental bodies and industry. NGU acquires, processes and interprets geophysical data both on a regional and detailed scale. The NGU staff of 220 includes representatives of 25 nationalities and 65 % of the staff are scientists.

For general information about NGU's organisation and mandate, see www.ngu.no

At NGU the following positions are vacant:

Post-doc fellowship in marine geology and carbonate geochemistry - 3 year position.

Applications are invited for a post-doc position within the project "Neotectonics and fluid flow processes". The position is available from June 2013 and has a duration of 36 months.

Research Project

The post-doc project focuses on hydrocarbon migration pathways, entrapment and leakage of shallow gas and formation of methane derived carbonate crusts on the continental shelf of the Barents Sea and other Norwegian ocean areas. Methane-derived carbonate crusts, their petrography, geochemistry, formation controls and geochronologic potential will be the main objectives of the project. Carbonate crust data will be combined with the results of gas analyses and geochemical profiling of sediments and sediment porewater in adjacent areas. The candidate will also investigate hydrocarbon anomalies observed in the subsurface and their connection pathways to the surface. Additional experience in basic marine geological techniques (shallow seismic, multibeam bathymetry, physical properties, sedimentology) are desirable. The analytical part of the work will take place using the facilities available at NGU and in co-operation with the NERC Isotope Geosciences Laboratory (NIGL) British Geological Survey, UK. NGU is a partner in the new Centre of Excellence "CAGE - Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate" which is based at the University of Tromsø.

Requirements and Training

The successful candidate should hold a PhD in earth sciences, ideally with experience in marine geology, carbonate geochemistry and sedimentology, and have appropriate qualification in the English language. Experiences in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and visualization tools are desirable. Good laboratory skills and basic knowledge in seismic interpretation is beneficial.

NGU wishes to have a gender-balanced workforce, and therefore encourages women to apply for this position. NGU's research staff is encouraged to publish reports and scientific articles and to participate in international scientific meetings. We can offer a favourable working environment, unique scientific challenges and good possibilities for participation in international forums and in further education programmes. Salary is dependent on qualification and experience. The lists of applicants are publicly available information. Only in special cases will this information be held back.

Further information

For further information, please contact research coordinator Aivo Lepland (aivo.lepland@ngu.no), Head of Marine Geology Reidulv Bøe (reidulv.boe@ngu.no) or Director of Geoenvironment Division Jan Cramer (jan.cramer@ngu.no), NGU tel. + 47 73 90 40 00.

Application with CV including a letter of your professional experience, a statement of motivation (one A4 page), and name, telephone, email address and mailing address of three professionals for reference should be submitted to www.ngu.no/vacancies no later than May 5 2013.
