Postdoc Researcher, NERC LiFT

About the role

We are recruiting for a 24-month Postdoctoral Researcher to work as part of the NERC-funded Lithium for Future Technologies (LiFT) project (more information about the project can be found at https://www.ukri.org/news/2-5m-nerc-funded-lithium-research-to-support-growing-electric-car-demand). The 3-year project seeks to explore the nature and distribution of Lithium bearing mineralized systems and the environmental impact of their exploitation. The post being advertised here will join an experienced team of ore deposit researchers (including the LODE and CERCAMS research groups) based in the Earth Sciences Department at the NHM in London. The research team is supported by curators and ext ensive rock, ore and mineral collections and there is a thriving group of postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students. This new appointment would join this group of scientists.

Two work packages of LiFT are co-led by the NHM team, with this new appointment to be specifically focused on lithium mineralization in the volcano-sedimentary environments of the McDermitt Caldera in the USA, the Jadar Basin in Serbia and borate systems in Turkey. The wider aim of the NHM team is to understand how lithium is transported into, within and then finally trapped within these systems.

The postholder will be focused on the mineralogical aspects of lithium deportment and behaviour in such systems and will work closely with another LiFT post, focused on isotope geochemistry, based at the University of Southampton.

About you

The postholder should have strong petrography skills with a track record of mineralogical analysis using XRD, E-beam techniques and LA-IC P-MS. The analysis of lithium in minerals is a challenging endeavour and the candidate is expected to contribute towards method development at the world class NHM mineralogy labs based in our Core Research Laboratories. We would particularly welcome applications from clay mineralogists, igneous petrologists, sedimentary petrologists and ore deposit geologists.

Closing date: 9am Tuesday 6 April 2021

Interviews expected week commencing 12 April 2021

Salary: £38,037 per annum
