The NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is an independent research institute associated with the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). NIOZ was founded in 1876 and is one of the oldest major European Oceanographic institutions. Its mission is to pursue curiosity-driven multidisciplinary marine research in coastal and shelf seas as well as in the open ocean through close co-operation between physicists, chemists, geologists and biologists.

Marine research is carried out by five science departments, with the Department of Marine Geology (GEO) focusing on modern and past dynamics of seabed systems. To re-enforce and further develop this field, Royal NIOZ offers a

Tenure track position for a geomarine scientist (m/f)

to provide a new dimension to our ocean-going research. We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified person with a PhD degree and post-doc experience in the geomarine sciences. The candidate should have both theoretical and practical knowledge of sea-going techniques in marine geology and advanced geochemical analysis of sedimentary records. He/she should have a keen interest to develop multidisciplinary research projects, and be able to supervise PhD and undergraduate students as well as technicians.

Job description. We invite an enthusiastic scientist to join and further develop GEO’s research on marine sedimentary systems, the domain of Marine Geology at NIOZ. GEO presently addresses research questions related to the changing productivity and sediment transport on ocean margins, from shelf to the deep ocean in response to anthropogenic and natural forcing. GEO is an actively ocean-going department and operates state-of-the-art landers, moorings and sensors to monitor seafloor processes, from tidal transports to the seasonal settling of plankton to the deep ocean to the variable growth of tropical and cold reef systems. By coring well selected sites, GEO accesses the archived record of anthropogenic climate change in sediments and corals, and trace system responses since the last deglaciation. Time-series data and samples are processed and analyzed shipboard and at NIOZ, involving geochemical techniques operated at world-class level. GEO is international, multidisciplinary and presently comprises 6 PhD and 4 postdoctoral researchers in NIOZ-wide geomarine research projects at the EU-level. The applicant is also expected to initiate new projects in this field by acquiring external funding.

We offer a tenure-track position for 5 years. At the end of a successful tenure track term a permanent scientific staff position will be offered up to the level of senior scientist. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications that is well above average, the proven ability to acquire external funding, and building of an international network and reputation. We offer a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance, a yearly 8% vacation allowance, year-end bonus and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the NWO Research Institutes.

Applications. Applicants should sent an application letter, CV with reference list, and a statement of (future) research interest to the Personnel Department, attended to Mrs. Jolanda Evers, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), P.O. Box 59, 1790 AB Den Burg, Texel, The Netherlands or e-mail to: jobs@nioz.nl

Closing date: until further notice.
