We seek an outstanding academic leader to further develop our successful research and enterprise activities in environmental radiochemistry. The University of Southampton has a well-established reputation for its outstanding research and education in Ocean and Earth Science (www.southampton.ac.uk/oes), within the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS). Enterprise activity in environmental radiochemistry is focused in the GAU-Radioanalytical Laboratories (www.gau.org.uk), for which the successful candidate is expected to provide leadership. NOCS forms a unique collaboration between the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the University of Southampton, representing an unparalleled investment in marine and earth science research and education in the UK. The University component comprises around 140 staff, 700 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate students. We have strong interdisciplinary links across the University to tackle global challenges, including a leading role in the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (www.southampton.ac.uk/smmi ). Extensive leading edge facilities enable world-class research and education. We expect the successful candidate to make full use of the opportunities for collaboration at NOCS and across the University of Southampton with, for example, chemists and civil engineers.

Candidate Evaluation

The successful candidate will demonstrate a track record in high quality research and an enthusiasm for teaching at all levels, rather than within a specific field of study. You will be expected to develop an externally funded research programme with an international profile. You will be committed to excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate education, including field courses, and engage in doctoral student supervision through our large Graduate School (see http://noc.ac.uk/gsnocs). Relevant experience in enterprise activities and the potential to secure income from diverse sources would be welcomed.

Application Process

When applying please submit your curriculum vitae, concise statements of research interests and aspirations, and teaching philosophy and interests, plus the names and contact details of at least three referees to www.jobs.soton.ac.uk quoting reference number: 279613HN, with an electronic copy sent direct to the Dean's office: S.J.Barry@soton.ac.uk.

Any enquiries should be directed to the Dean of Natural & Environmental Sciences, Professor Stephen Hawkins (viaS.J.Barry@soton.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is 6 October 2013.

Interviews are to be held in November 2013.

At the University of Southampton we promote equality and value diversity.
