Junior Geoscientist

Aberdeen

Organisation

Founded in July 2007, Northlight Geoscience is a technology spin-off company from the Dept of Geology & Petroleum Geology, University of Aberdeen. Northlight retains a strong R&D profile in order to develop new commercial offerings for the E&P industry.

Advanced computational mathematics (e.g. the GASLOG programme) underpin Northlight’s development and the integration of geological and geophysical data into computational format to make predictions is the basis of our business. Northlight currently provides three main technology offerings:

  • The prediction of reservoir quality and saturation from well-site/drilling data
  • Repair of well logs
  • Direct prediction of formation characteristics from wireline/LWD data bypassing conventional formation evaluation.

As E&P companies and technology companies increasingly adopt Northlight’s unique technological offerings it is expected that the company will grow and develop global operations. Currently our main business area is in NW Europe working with offshore and onshore projects.

Job Description

The successful applicant will in the first instance join the Aberdeen-based team where training will be provided on the operation and application of GASLOG and Stratabase. Additional training will be provided on the use of formation evaluation software, well-site operations and data acquisition and offshore safety.

Although the job is largely office-based it is quite likely that some visits to offshore and onshore well-sites will be required.

A passion for earth science and enthusiasm for technology applications to earth science are important.

There is no requirement for research experience but opportunities for involvement in R&D projects are likely.

Routine tasks will include the extensive use of EXCEL, Microsoft Access and large volumes of borehole data in LAS format.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Have or expect to attain a 2.1 or higher level Honours degree in a geoscience discipline
  • Less than 2 years post BSc experience
  • Computer literacy and an interest in quantitative aspects of geoscience are essential
  • Background in geophysics or physics would be useful

Interested candidates should forward their CV to Maria Bosher at m.bosher@northlightgeo.com
