NCCCS PhD Scheme



The National Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage is pleased to announce a scheme to support five PhD studentships in aspects of CCS. These PhD schemes will provide students with the opportunity to work under world class researchers based both at the British Geological Survey and the University of Nottingham. The student will be awarded their PhD from the University of Nottingham. The PhD areas are:

1. Dissolution processes at the CO2/brine interface.
Qualification Requirement: Students should have a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent Masters degree in applied mathematics, engineering or a related subject.

2. Mineralogy and geochemistry of ultramafic rocks for mineral CO2 sequestration. Qualification Requirement: Students should have a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent Masters degree in geoscience or a related subject.

3. Microstructural analysis of time variant evolution in pore geometry of cement materials during carbonation. Qualification Requirement: Students should have a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent Masters degree in engineering or a related subject.

4. Carbon capture and storage in China - technology, policy, international collaboration and implications for the global climate challenge. Qualification Requirement: Students should have a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent Masters degree in a related subject. The student must have a technical understanding of CCS. A Chinese Speaker would be highly desirable.

5. Carbon capture and storage: factors influencing public attitudes. Qualification Requirement: Students should have a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent Masters Degree in psychology or a related subject.

All students should have an understanding of CCS.

The deadline for applications is Thursday 28 April 2011. This studentship is available to commence in October 2011. A tax-free stipend starting from £13,590 per annum is available for three years, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Due to funding rules associated with this scholarship, this opportunity is limited to UK and EU students.
