Department of Geosciences, University of OsloPostdoctoral Research Fellow - NorSEE projectA postdoctoral research position in oceanography is open at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo. The fellowship is for 3 years, starting as soon as possible. The Section for Meteorology and Oceanography comprises roughly 40 people, including professors, post-docs, students and staff. We have active collaborations with other Departments at the University (Physics and Mathematics) and with numerous institutions abroad and in Norway. Project description: The position is part of the research project Nordic Seas Eddy Exchanges (NorSEE), a 3 year project (2013-2016) funded by the Norwegian Research Council's FRIPRO program. The project is led by the University of Oslo (UiO) with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute as a partner. We have in addition cooperative agreements with researchers in the United States. The project focuses on mesoscale eddy stirring in the Nordic Seas and how this impacts the regional circulation. The work seeks to characterize the eddy processes at work here, and to define benchmarks by which models can be assessed. A range of techniques and data types will be used, including Lagrangian surface drifters, satellite data and numerical models. The candidate will participate in the interpretation of results in collaboration with the two principal investigators. The candidate will also have the opportunity to travel to the US to work with our collaborators, and will participate in international meetings. Qualifications: The candidate should have a PhD in oceanography, meteorology, physics or
fluid mechanics. Experience in theoretical, observational and/or
numerical studies are all relevant. Good programming skills (e.g. in
MATLAB) are advantageous. The candidate should document research on an
internationally competitive level within the fields described above. A
