Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
(SKO 1352) in Geodynamics

(Absolute plate motions and dynamic topography of Europe) available at the Physics of Geological processes (PGP), a Center of Excellence under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
http://www.fys.uio.no/pgp/index.php

The candidate must have a PhD (or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree) in Geophysics/Geodynamics.

We are looking for highly motivated and competent candidates with mantle dynamics, dynamic topography and/or plate tectonic modelling. The Center of Excellence for the Physics of Geological Processes (PGP) at the University of Oslo is seeking a post-doctoral candidate to participate in the TOPO-Europe related project "Mantle forcing of Earth surface evolution in Europe and the Mediterranean: From Past to Present (TOPO-4D)" - a collaborative project between six academic institutions in Europe. The PGP component of the project "Absolute plate motions and dynamic topography of Europe" aims to use novel interpretations of slab remnants in the upper and lower mantle to relate plate reconstructions to a mantle reference frame. This provides the link between the European plate and underlying mantle through time and allows for realistic calculations of the evolution of dynamic topography based on back-in-time integration of the convection equations starting from mantle structure as imaged by tomography. PGP tasks include (1) Refining Mediterranean plate tectonic models and construct oceanic paleo-age grids, (2) Reconstructing Europe (past 100 Myr) in an absolute mantle reference frame, (3) Testing plate tectonic models against seismic tomography models, and (4) Calculating European dynamic topography in the present and past. We are seeking an outstanding and highly motivated researcher to participate in this international collaboration. Numerical modelling experience and programming skills are required and we expect the applicant's experience to include modelling of mantle dynamics, dynamic topography and/or modelling of plate tectonic kinematics.

The successful candidate will work in a lively cross-disciplinary and international environment (fourteen nationalities are currently represented in PGP). PGP is a new cross-disciplinary science centre at the interface between physics and geology where integrated field, experimental, theoretical, and computer modeling studies approach geological processes. He or she will be based in Oslo, but will be expected to travel occasionally to work with the international collaborators. Professor Trond H. Torsvik will lead the project.

Please also refer to the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for academic positions: http://www.uio.no/admhb/reglhb/personal/tilsettingvitenskapelig/index.xml

UiO has an agreement for all employees, aiming to secure rights to research results a.o. The University of Oslo wants to have more women in academic positions. Women are therefore encouraged to apply.
