We seek a highly motivated student with strong field-based research interests to be part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary research program investigating the origin of Permian mafic igneous suites of "northern India" and implications for the geodynamics of the southern Tethyan margin of Pangea. The Permian period (296-251 million years ago, Ma) is notable for (i) its mass extinctions and (ii) large-scale mafic volcanism. An apparenly enhanced output of mafic volcanism affected many continental areas on the eastern side of Pangea (to the north, east and south of Paleotethys) now preserved in the Himalaya along a 2500 km long belt between northern Pakistan and NE India (via NW India, Nepal, and southern Tibet). Surprisingly little is known about these volcanic series. This project will investigate the (i) spatial-temporal and genetic linkages between the mafic igneous suites, and (ii) geodynamic setting of magmatism that may have been related to an unidentified LIP and/or continental rupture and drifting event. The broader study will not only provide fundamental information on the geodynamic processes associated with plumes and/or rifting, but key insights on important rock packages now forming part of Asia.
