The Ruhr-University Bochum (Faculty of Geosciences) invites applications for the position of a scientist to supervise the electron microprobe laboratory. The appointment will be at a

scale of the German Tariff System and involves teaching and research components. The position allows a promotion to grade A14.

The main responsibilities will be

  • The organization, technical and scientific management and running of the electron microprobe laboratory
  • The development and implementation of new analytical techniques and technology for the analysis of solid materials using the electron microprobe
  • The teaching of B.Sc and M.Sc level courses in the Geoscience program and the training of students, researchers and external users from Geosciences and Materials Sciences on the theoretical background and practical use of the machine. The teaching load is 5 hours per week each semester.

It is desired that the candidate participates in

  • administrative tasks related to Computers (hard and software), ordering of supplies, maintenance of databases, and coordination of analytical sessions
  • independent scientific research, obtaining research grants, and collaboration with existing research projects

The required qualifications according to § 66 b LVO NRW are

  • Successful completion of a degree in natural sciences or engineering with some training in Geosciences,
  • a doctoral degree in a relevant area of science or engineering and a demonstrated teaching ability, and
  • professional experience of at least three years and six months after the completion of the basic degree, or at least one year after the completion of the doctoral degree.

The candidate must have strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of either German or the English language is required and it is expected that the candidate will acquire fluency in the other soon after appointment.
