Senior Research GC-c-IRMS Technician/Research Associate

This position will manage the School's IRMS facility which is equipped with a Thermo Delta V Plus with three peripheral instruments:

  • Thermo FlashEA 1112 for 13C, 15N, and 34S analysis of solids and liquids by Dumas combustion.
  • Thermo Trace GC Ultra with custom pre-concentrator for 13C and 15N trace gas analysis and organic compounds.
  • OI Analytical Aurora 1030 TOC analyser for DI13C/DO13C analysis of waters.

A second IRMS with EA and TOC peripherals will be purchased in the near future and a new purpose designed laboratory is currently being built to house the IRMS instrumentation.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • sample analysis and method development;
  • the operation, maintenance, trouble-shooting and repair of equipment;
  • supervision of facility use by, and training of, researchers and post-graduate students.

The Senior Research Technician/Research Associate will mostly be involved in research but may undertake some commercial work if the instrument capacity is available. The successful candidate would also have the opportunity for independent research and publication depending on qualifications and interests. Method development and research into new analytical techniques for coastal biogeochemistry applications will be a key part of the position.
