The Badlands White River Group and late Cretaceous marine deposits are found around the Black Hills and extend eastward across the state toward the Missouri River. The department has access to a GIS/remote sensing lab, a biogeochemistry lab, a micro-CT scanning unit, and a facility offering SEM, XRD and XRF analysis. The Museum of Geology's new Paleontology Research Laboratory has capabilities for fossil preparation and curation, as well as archival and specimen storage.
