Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geological Engineering
The Engineering Geology and Resource Geotechnics research group in the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Geological Engineering for up to two years, starting during Summer/early Fall 2022.
Simon Fraser University is a leading Canadian public university. The Department of Earth Sciences is based at SFU's Burnaby campus in Metro Vancouver, and undertakes advanced research in a variety of areas, including geology, hydrogeology, glaciology, engineering geology and geohazards (https://www.sfu.ca/earth-sciences.html). The Department also hosts the Centre for Natural Hazards Research (https://www.sfu.ca/cnhr.html).
Candidates with a Ph.D. degree in engineering geology, geotechnical engineering or rock mechanics are encouraged to apply. We are looking for applicants with relevant research experience in 2D and 3D computationally-based modelling of complex rock engineering problems, with preference but not restricted to, slope stability assessment or landslide modelling. Experience in the use of remote sensing tools for geotechnical or geohazard assessment and their application on numerical modelling will be considered a plus. The candidate must have a good command of English and be characterized by a cooperative, committed and responsible working style. The Fellow will have completed their PhD prior to the start of the postdoc and be not more than five years beyond their degree. International applicants will be expected to move to Canada and obtain a valid work permit and/or visa in order to receive their appointment at Simon Fraser University. For information on the visa application process for your country, please refer to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's website: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/immigration-citizenship.html
The fellow will take part in funded research projects of the Engineering Geology and Resource Geotechnics Group, developing their own research as well as collaborating with graduate students and faculty. Occasional supporting teaching duties such as invited lectures, labs or seminars in areas of expertise are possible. The Engineering Geology laboratory is equipped with a wide variety of advanced modelling software and an expanding suite of remote sensing field equipment (www.sfu.ca/eggrg). The progress of the research work will be assessed at the end of the first year in order to renew the contract for a second year.
The fellowship is supported by the FRBC Chair in Resource Geoscience and Geotechnics and provides CAD$50,000 per annum plus benefits, with an additional annual CAD$3,000 in research support. Applicants are requested to submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests and the names, titles, affiliations and contact information of two referees. Materials should be collated and sent in a single PDF file via email. In the subject line of the email, indicate the following information: "2022 Postdoctoral Fellow Application, (Applicant Name)."
The closing date for applications is 25 April 2022. Applications and questions should be directed to:
