Project Mineralogist

Primary Responsibilities

This position is accountable for the successful and profitable management of projects and for clear, concise verbal and written communication with colleagues and clients.

Specific responsibilities

Operations

  • Manages mineralogical projects to optimize client satisfaction and project profitability.
  • Plans, organizes and co-ordinates laboratory projects.
  • Prepares quotes for projects.
  • Designs and supervises sample preparation and section preparation activities.
  • Designs and supervises the set-up and operation of automated mineralogy machines.
  • Select and use through outsourcing, other methods to support, compliment or validate the in-house data (QEMSCAN, SEM, XRD, probe etc).
  • Validate Quality Control data.
  • Prepare spreadsheet based reports and full text reports.
  • Invoice projects.
  • Helps maintain target quality and target turnaround times.

Reporting To

  • Advanced Mineralogy Manager and/or Department Supervisor/Manager
  • This position works under general direction

Skills

  • A University degree in Mineralogy, Geology, Environmental Mineralogy, Soil Science or Earth Sciences is required.
  • 5 - 8 years of previous working experience (or equivalent) in a mineralogy related field.
  • Intimate knowledge of QEMSCAN or MLA mineralogy type analysis and the awareness of other techniques available.
  • Extensive experience in performing a wide-variety of optical microscope and instrument-based mineralogical studies for base, precious and industrial mineral, mineralogical-environmental or industrial mineralogy projects.
  • Comfortable with IDiscover and associated software.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in managing mineralogy projects.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Candidates must possess excellent written and oral skills and be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • A solid understanding of MS Project Management and Oracle applications would also be an asset.
  • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company's Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
