Bedrock Geologist to The Geological Survey of Sweden

We are recruiting a project employee for a Horizon Europe-funded research project on mineral system modelling and prospectivity mapping of rare earths-cobalt-bearing IOCG system, and Lithium-tin-tantalum-tungsten mineral potential in granite/pegmatite-related systems in Västernorrland, Norrbotten and Bergslagen county.

The Geological Survey of Sweden – SGU – is the authority for issues relating to bedrock, soil, and groundwater in Sweden. The Economic Geology division is part of the Department of Mineral Resources at SGU and conducts bedrock mapping mainly in areas with mineral potential, updates and maintains databases of mineral resources, lithogeochemistry, soil- and till geochemistry.

Project description

The employee will be part of a larger Horizon Europe project and focus on prospectivity mapping on the rare earths-cobalt-bearing IOCG and lithium-tin-tantalum-tungsten based on exploration and mineral systems. This work is essentially dedicated to the operational testing and application of the mineral systems models integrated within the exploration information system tools which will be developed by other work packages. The main work will be focused on testing the EIS tools and producing mineral prospectivity maps with the EIS tools using multi-source data including geological, geophysical, and geochemical data for the test sites. The area of the test sites ranges from prospect to regional scale, and the results from the case studies will afterward be synthesized to better assess the European potential for the critical raw materials in scope (Li, W, Ta, Co, REE, etc.).

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with:

  • an MSc, Ph.D., or an equivalent degree in Geosciences
  • a good track record in geostatistics and you are an expert in spatial data modelling
  • experience, with a good track record, in 2D-3D geological modelling,
  • experience, with a good track record, in data mining and mineral prospectivity mapping,
  • understanding of ore geology and mineral system
  • fluent English, both written and spoken

Personal qualifications

You are responsible, driven and have a sense of structure, and are interested in learning new things. You enjoy working both independently and in groups and find it easy to collaborate and communicate with others, for example colleagues and external partners. Willingness to learn Swedish is desired.
