Faculty - Natural and Environmental SciencesPostdoctoral Research Assistant - Palaeoceanography & PalaeoclimateLocation: National Oceanography Centre Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher within a NERC-funded research project, fixed term for 19 months. The project, coordinated by Prof. Eelco J. Rohling, is developing a stratigraphically continuous record of sea-level change in unprecedented time-steps of a century, covering an entire glacial cycle. This will be quantitatively compared with ice-core records of especially temperature and CO2 concentrations. The project will thus determine the fundamental nature of the pre-anthropogenic relationship between global ice volume, temperature and CO2 concentrations and evaluate how rapidly the Earth climate system can adapt to a change in forcing. This Postdoctoral position concerns especially the development of a statistical assessment and process understanding of sea-level variability in relation to records of change in other key components of the climate system. The necessary minimum qualification is a PhD in an earth, ocean, or (palaeo-) climate science discipline. An understanding of the use of geochemical/isotope data in palaeoclimate reconstruction is required, as well as sound experience in statistics and the use of programmes such as MATLAB, MATHEMATICA, or similar. Skills in numerical modelling and dynamical systems theory will be an advantage. You will be expected to lead the project's main effort of quantitative/statistical data analyses, publication/ dissemination and the setting up and running of a public-access project website. Further details may be obtained from Prof. Eelco J. Rohling (e.rohling@noc.soton.ac.uk). Start dates are negotiable, but as soon as practical. The closing date for this post is 3 October 2011 and the interview date is to be confirmed. Please apply online through the www.jobs.soton.ac.uk or alternatively telephone 023 8059 2750 for an application form. Please quote vacancy reference number 043211HN on all correspondence.
